FLINDERS RANGES TOURISM OPERATORS ASSOCIATION

Mountains of Memory Project Fact Sheet

  • based on the geo-tourism strategy developed by the Flinders Ranges Tourism Operators Association (FRTOA) in 2005-06

  • funding from the Australian Tourism Development Program (ATDP) through AusIndustry to develop a range of plans and strategies to grow and develop tourism in the Flinders Ranges

  • work on the project commenced in January 2007, and this planning stage will be completed by June 2008

  • the project was inspired by international recognition of the unique and ancient Ediacaran fossil fields in the region. The Ediacaran period is named after the Ediacaran fossils, which are the earliest examples of multicellular life on earth - found in and around the Flinders Ranges! Stretching from 542 to 635 million years ago, examples have now also been found at several other locations around the world in rocks of the same age.

  • This is the first time a geological period has been named in over 120 years, and it’s the first time a geological period has been named after rocks in the Southern Hemisphere. So when you think of the Flinders Ranges, remember this is the home of the oldest, and newest geological period!

  • Geotourism is defined as "tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents".

  • The project is being coordinated by a Project Management Committee of operators, NRDB, SA Tourism Commission and FROSAT reps, and includes 5 key elements:

    • Development of a brand statement for the Flinders Ranges, completed in Sept 07 Since then we have employed an agency called Leap to develop a marketing and communications strategy by the end of May

    • A regional interpretive plan – currently in development through community consultations by the Interp Consultant, Lorraine Edmunds

    • An operator training program and related resource materials linked to the brand strategy and interpretive plan – currently being developed by the PMC. The first training session was held at Orraparinna at the end of February

    • A merchandise strategy – currently under discussion with the PMC

  • there is a place in the strategy development for all the experiences offered to visitors to the region, while the point of difference to be highlighted will be the unique geological and fossil history
